The AJGES organized an action of information and outreach about the environment in northern Senegal.
The Association of Young Geologists and Environmentalists of Senegal (AJGES) committed to the promotion of green cities has accompanied during the Environmental Week held from 23 to 30 August 2020, the inhabitants of the town of Doumga Ourou Alpha (Matam, North of Senegal) by a reforestation and sanitation campaign.
The main objective of this initiative was to contribute to the promotion of green cities and the fight against the advancing desert which strongly affects this northern part of the country. Among other things, ithe purpose was to:
- raise awareness of the population on the importance of preserving nature;
- fight climate change;
- contribute effectively to reforestation.
This reforestation and sanitation campaign saw the participation of village leaders, administrative authorities, and several pupils and students.
Panels
Several panels on climate change, citizenship and environmental education (Eco-gestures etc.), the valorization of local materials (Eco-construction) and the circular economy were proposed to students and local officials (see slider below).
Plantations
The reforestation has allowed to reforest 1,000 fruit trees in all households, that is 3 trees per house, and 1,000 non fruit trees in all public places of the village. (see slider below).
The perpetuation of this reforestation campaign will allow in the long term to:
- slow down the advance of the desert;
- recover land already threatened by the advancing desert;
- improve the living environment of the populations.
Sanitation
At the same time, a sanitation operation was carried out in the city with the installation of garbage cans in all corners as well as in public places (image below).
